A piece of athletic tape is my go to...[/quote]
Even that isn't necessary. Braid slipping on a spool is the biggest myth in fishing.

I have seen it spin on a spool a few times... the line was spooled poorly and very loosely... none of which were very good fisherman....

You probably saw their line dig into the line underneath. Probably the second biggest myth in fishing...A googan thinking that braid is going to transform him into a good fisherman.

no doubt what i saw... line coming off the reel like drag being pulled, but the spool not spinning at all....

And here I thought "old green Penns being clunky pieces of junk" was the biggest myth in fishing! ;-) LOL!
Ooops, back on topic: what do you braid gurus think of how the added stress of these heavier test braids on these newfangled reel gears will have?
Are they 'geared' to hold up under the strain?
Thanks!(RETIRED) mostly.

Not a braid guru by any means... i think most of the newer reels will be fine... you just cant be loading your little US reel with 80 lb PP...oke:

Re: penn battle 1000
DRH obviously you know something I don't. I have watched braid slip on the spool multiple times, and I can attest to the line being packed because I watched them being spooled. I guess there is no reason for the largest tackleshop in the area to put tape on all the spools that they fill with braid then. I think I will stick with the way I am doing it with electrical tape, seems to work pretty dang well.

Re: penn battle 1000
With the way the today's infinite antireverses are made there is very little pressure if any at all caused by the line or any tension on it on the reel's gears. However the rotor and line roller are subject to much more pain.
Heavy braid line and ludicrous drag ratings can lead some to crank too hard on their reels and put too much pressure on the gears. I remember when the U.S. Reels first came out, I was jigging for pompano on the P'cola pier next to a guy with a new U.S. and he hooked a nice pomp about 2.5 to 3 lbs. I asked him if he had a net and if he needed help landing it. He replied "No I've got 20 lb. braid". To my amazement he proceeded to winch the fish over the rail. I saw the same guy a week or two later with a different reel. I had to ask why he wasn't using his new reel. He proceeded to curse the reel, the manufacturer and mostly those no good pot metal gears. I laughed to myself and thought "Dumbass, it is called a U.S. Reel not a U.S. Winch".

Re: penn battle 1000
MOST FOLKS DONT THINK ABOUT THE AFTER EFFECT ON THEIR REELS AND USE IT JUST LIKE A WINCH BECAUSE THEY GOT THERE FISH IN.I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF OLDER PENNS LIKE THE 5500 AND 6500 HAVE DRAG PROBLEMS LATER ON BECAUSE OF ABUSE THAT ME MYSELF COULD HAVE AVOIDED BUT I WAS YOUNGER AND I GOT MY FISH IN WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT AFTER EFFECT TO THE DRAG SYSTEM AND LET ME TELL YOU THOSE REELS DRAG SYSTEM IS ANYTHING BUT SMOOTH NOW!JERKY IS MORE LIKE IT AND NOT SMOOTH LIKE A SHIMANO!REPLACED THE DRAG WASHERS AND THAT DID NOT HELP !NOW TO GET THE DRAG WHERE I WANT IT,THE DRAG KNOB IS ABOUT TO FALL OFF!YOU LIVE AND LEARN!

Re: penn battle 1000
You can abuse a reel by using heavy drag and using it like a winch, but as long as you do regular maintenance to it an angler can avoid failures as such. As for your jerky drag, you can add some cals or shimano drag grease and that will 9 times out of 10 solve that problem.
