Ha! These are great! I remember fishing inshore with my grandfather, dad, uncle, and cousin as a kid so a lot of these bring back memories. I didn't know that "hard tail" wasn't the actual name of the fish, but I guarantee I could point one of them out from as many as we've caught!

I've heard undersized speckled trout called "hammer handles" and when you throw a cast net as poorly as I do, you are said to be "throwing bananas". Croakers have been called "yodeling trout." A "water haul" is when you come up with an empty net.

Allow me a redo ; )
Screaming Drag- is the sweet sound your spinning reel makes when that smoker king or jack takes the bait and makes that 100 yard run! You hold on tight as you listen to the advice of the well seasoned regulars around you, “follow the fish, move up, move down, go over, go under”.
A dozen things cross your mind: will he spool me? Do I have enough backing line? Should I have gone with a heavier line? Will my knot hold? Will a tourist with his newly bought Zebco 404 from Walmart cast over me with his oversized chunk of frozen squid?
As you get it up to the pier, you are relieved when a regular stands next to you with an IronMan gaff in hand. The next sweet sound is the thud of the fish hitting the deck.
Hurry up April !

And then there is bait slang:
LY: scaled sardine (Harengula jaguana)
Pogie (bunker to you guys from up north): Menhaden (Brevoortia spp)
Cig/Cigar Minnow: Round Scad (Decapterus punctatus)
Spanish Sardine: Sardinella aurita
More Fish Slang:
Bobo/Bonita/Bonito: LittleTunny ( Euthynnus alletteratus)
Puppy Drum: Small Black Drum (eatin' size)
Northern Mackerel (rare at GSP, fairly common at FWP): Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda)
Has no one posted Googan yet??
That's a person who doesn't pay attention, throws common sense out the window and fishes in way that screws other people up.
Example: Like when I'm coming down the rail, yelling "coming down, fish one" and the GOOGANs just stand there with 4 rods leaning on the rail and a big double top tackle box wide open.
Or fishes in way that makes no sense. Example: two gotchas on a heavy wire bottom rig with stinky squid on every hook. And a cork. That's Googan fishing.
