Ok, here's an easy setup from the beach. It worked for me first week of October last year. 1/4 oz. red jig head with a 3" pearl white gulp alive shrimp. Fish it like a worm on the bottom as if you were bass fishing. I caught a bunch of flounder and a few whiting. You can Carolina rig live or dead shrimp for whiting and several other species. Try sand fleas for reds. Good luck

I am pretty well convinced most any 'quality' fishing tackle is suitable for occasional use in saltwater especially if you keep it from being dropped in the sand or dunked in the surf.
Preemptive and post use of a protective spray and proper lubrication of bearings and other moving parts is essential for reel performance and longevity in such a corrosive environment.
Most of the cheaply built reels are just too 'flimsy' and poorly engineered to to endure what saltwater anglers put them through and do not endure for long.
'Quality' reels have better components and will last WITH PROPER CARE!
If a reel has "stainless bearings" that is good.
If it has "anti-rust-bearings" (ARB) that is better.
If it has "sealed anti-rust bearings" (SARB) that is best!

FWIW I like Blindbat's tip on Gulp Shrimp in the surf best ;-)
    (RETIRED) mostly.

Hiring pier # is your best bet. A carolina rig with live or fresh dead works well. I would not bring your muskee reels to surf fish. The salt and sand are real tough on fresh water reels. To pier fish its not as big of an issue. You can catch kings spanish reds flounder speck from the pier.

    Thanks for the info.

An awful lot depends on the water temp that time of year. If it's still high, your chances go down---remember, that's the peak of hurricane season, but if the water is starting to cool off, you have a shot at redfish, pompano, whiting, etc.

I'll let those who surf fish more than I do win that muskie trip, but I wish you good luck and maybe I'll meet you at the pier. Remember that you aren't deep sea fishing and don't need very heavy tackle---no stumps for the fish to wrap you around in the surf, so you can let your drag do the work and have more fun with lighter tackle. It's not hard to whip a 20# bull red on 10# test as long as there aren't any other folks to tangle with.
    Thanks for the advice!

    Kyle,
Thanks for calling me from Smithville. Hope to see you down there the second week in September. I'm on a waiting list to fish, but like to hook up with you on some pier, or charter fishing. I be calling ya!
