Last Saturday, after the storms had passed, my wife and I decided we would go to the pier. I was born in Mobile so I know about Gulf Shores during the week of July 4, but like Carl, I needed a pier-fix. We left our house in Daphne around 1:30pm, traveled along Hwy 181 and Hwy 98, and had no traffic issues until we reached Hwy 59 in Foley. Hwy 59 south was a parking lot. After about 40 minutes we had traveled only a short distance on Hwy 59, so we turned around and then cut through to the beach toll road. Traffic on the toll road was moving along really well until ½ mile from the toll booth. It took about 10 minutes to travel the ½ mile to the toll booth. When we arrived at Canal Road, the traffic was not moving at all. Canal Road was also a parking lot. We sat at the Canal Road intersection for 10 minutes or so without moving at all. We were now over 1¾ hours on the road and still a long way from the pier, so we decided to give it up and go home. We turned right on Canal Road and headed to Hwy 59. That was the only smart decision we made all afternoon. Going north on Hwy 59 was no problem, but the traffic going south was very heavy all the way to where we turned on CR 64 at Loxley.

There would have to be some consistently repeated spectacular fishing reports to get this old man sufficiently motivated to get up early enough to arrive at the pier by 5am. So with that possibility off the table, I don’t think I’ll be driving to Gulf Shores this coming weekend.

That dagblasted beach traffic is exactly why I like to get to the pier before dawn and leave as late as possible.

Reminds me of my favorite joke from living in Branson, MO. Driver to pedestrian, "Hey, you need a ride?" Pedestrian says, "No thanks, I'm in a hurry."

Well... Looking at the weather, I'm likely staying home and dry.

Weather made the decision for me.
    Doing honey-do's at the house.
Really not liking all this damn rain, gonna really mess up the inshore fishing, again.
I haven't fished the causeway yet this year and it may be September before I bother.

Rainy day = Buying a used rod & meeting a forum member (Sammy), running a few errands for the wife, bird/wildlife watching with my boy, a little TV, playing some World of Tanks and staying dry.

I spent the day re-spooling the surf reels and working on a Penn 525Mag that had a different idea of what drag washers were supposed to do. Mobile Bay is belching mud and lumber when I went for my afternoon walk in rain gear.

Dutch, we need to put some big baits out sometime, my 114H hasn't seen water since last year.
I believe I've some stingray in the freezer, though fresh would be better.
