Re: penn live linner
Like I said in above post, the little trip lever can be removed to solve that problem. That gives me the choice as to when I want to set the hook as well as when I want to flip the lever to begin reeling.
@ Peaches - choice is one of the things that makes America a great place to live. If everyone used the same of everything, life would be pretty damn boring. To each his own. Yours works for you. Mine works for me.Screw it. Let's ride.

Many times I have tried to reel mine to disengage the liveliner only to not have it click back up, so when I set the hook, it just backlashes. I only manually flip mine now.

I have one of the original 5600L reels that manually tripping the lever was the only option and bought a smaller Quantum that had an automatic release. I found that I much prefer the manual variety. I had been wanting a newer Penn for some time and after studying the schematics and parts lists of both the 560L and the 5600L I knew I could make the newer reel act like the older version.
Another thing I do or actually don't do is set the hook when using these reels. I just let the fish get the slack out of the line and as soon as I hear the bait drag's clicker I flip the switch and let the the drag pressure and the fish's momentum do all the sticking. My hook up percentage may not be the best, but it isn't too shabby either. It was a lot worse when I used to feel the need to "jack-em-up".

Re: penn live linner
Just because yall fish with a manual does not mean that it is the only way to fish. Neither does it mean that it is the best way to fish. Yes you many have caught 100+ kings from the pier this year, but how much time have you spent on the pier. I am sure your fish caught vs. time spent ratio is pretty low. There are alot of others who fish out there who have alot better ratio and don't use a manual.
Now I am not saying that a manual reel is the wrong way to fish. It is just another way to fish. Everyone should fish how they feel comfortable. If that means they want to use a zebco to catch a king then so be it. Everyone pays to fish on the pier and they have just as much right to fish the way they want to.
Back to the original post. . . The liveliners are a great way to fish for kings. Takes a little time to get use to it. I have seen many people backlash them (myself included) by forgetting to trip the lever or not turning the handle first. I am sure you will end up backlashing the reel at some point. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Just clear the backlash and go back to fishing. The only way to get good with it is to USE it. I believe our pier is the best on the gulf. We have the largest variety of species and the best people to stand next to on the rail.

Re: penn live linner
Wilson, I find it extremely difficult to believe that out of 270+ fish that you are claiming that you and Tyler have caught with a manual reel that every single one of them struck while the line was off the roller and on your finger.

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
