Re: Locals look out!
Hope to be through chasing thunder chickens by the end of April and drowning bull minnerz the next week. Just wondering what kind of artificials the flounder would bite when everyone is sold out of minnows.

Re: Locals look out!
I guess i will be a googan myself for a little while. I just moved to mobile and want to start fishing the GS pier. I've always grown up visiting OB and have always wanted to get into fishing the pier. Nows my chance but i have no clue really what i'm doing. Anyone got any tips on what kind of tackle i should bring? line type and lb.? wire leader or mono? frozen or live bait? Help please i want to catch some good fish. Thanks

Bunch of threads on this already, what you wanting to catch ??Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years

Sheeps and reds, live shrimp, fiddler crabs, sand fleas, ghost shrimp close to pilings, as light of weight as possible, 8-12 lb test mainline w/ 8-20 lb fluorocarbon leader
Kings will eat about anything at all if presented right, but most prefer live baits or dead baits (think shiny fish from 2-14"12 -20 lb mainline with 15-60 lb wire leader
Spanish, live baits under 4" and anyhing worked erratically , jigs, gotchas, McDonald's straws, etc 4-12 lb mainline 20-60 fluorocarbon or lightt wire leaderGive a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. Re: Locals look out!
Time on the pier just looking and talking would be time well spent. Spend a lot of time searching old posts here on the forum. Most everything you would want to ask has been asked and answered multiple times. (hear that juniors?) Also, go to J&M Tackle on Canal Rd in OB and just look around. Talk to the guys in the back about the pier and begin getting an idea of the gear you're gonna need. Fishing can be as bad as golf or diving with regards to equipment. If you're a gear junkie, get ready to spend some money.
Screw it. Let's ride.

Re: Locals look out!
I have never caught a flounder off the pier using a gulp. I've had much better luck using live bait, bull minnows, tiny lys(if you can catch them). Dragging a 1/2oz. curly tail jig off the bottom has produced some flounder for me in the past. If trying to catch smaller bait fish get a smaller bait ribbon rig at J&M or make your own.
For flounder I typically use a med-light action rod with 6-10lb test mono. Anywhere from 1/2oz to 3/4oz egg sinker, small swivel, then 10-12in. of 10lb flouro leader. I use smaller Owner brand hooks( I forget the sizes) just ask someone at a tackle shop what they recommend. Hope this helps, good luck! :fishing:

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
