While we are on the topic of sharking...
are there any castable conventional reels out there ideal suited for mid size sharks? I'm wanting to get something for a sharking trip that is a little heavier than my conflict 8000. I've seen some say the penn 4/0 is castable 25-50yrds, but a lot that say it's difficult. If I can't reliably cast to the Sharks, I'll look into renting a kayak instead.

The Penn 4/0 are castable much further than 25-50, with a mentor & practice the 6/0 can cast an easy 50+ yards.
Look up casting 6/0 on YouTube, there are Hawaiians who fish from shore for Ulua & Tuna using 6/0s.
I use Penn 9500SS & 8500SS for casting shark baits.
Here is one guy casting a 6/0 and getting good distance.

I Don't think I'll make this specific trip. I will be down at the very end of April and then again in mid July.
Chili, I know you are an excellent resource for shark fishing. I currently have a Penn conflict 8000, which can handle the small sharks up to 5. I will probably be getting a FN Lethal 100 soon as well to do a similar thing. Assuming I don't have a kayak, think those two will do the job at Ft morgan? I like the idea of bringing a conventional, but lack of versatility, weight, and my inexperience casting them could make buying a senator a bad decision.Last edited by Mattb; 02-21-2015 at 03:09 PM.

ok! I will try for a Friday night or Saturday afternoon till late night. Need to check with parking, might have to go to Perdido keys area. I will let you know for sure.
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
