Re: Best Buy?
So by chaning out the Spool and Cup then does that make it more efficient? See I am a newb at this stuff John. Does J & M do such conversions? John what reel do you recommend?

Re: Best Buy?
John and Steve are making light of the fact that the 704's roller and sleeve are essentially crap, as compared to the 706's roller and twin ball bearings. The easiest and best way to use the 706 roller (if you can find one) and bearings, is to use a 706 rotor cup which has the roller arm as part of the casting (if you can find one), which forces you to use a 706 spool (if you can find one).
As I was trying to tell you earlier don't embrace the old stuff. You're a newb you have zero legacy associated with this tackle, so that means you have zero experience to fall back on, zero parts stockpiled and best of all you have almost zero habits and notions to break free of.

Re: Best Buy?
706 parts are hard to come by and if I didn't have a life time supply parts I would force myself to use VS's.This is where the 704 has value, spool shafts, gears, pinion bearing, handle, ect. are all the same just stick with the Z series if possible.Even though the 706 is one of the toughest reels ever made there are two main flaws, single dog on the anti reverse and the shaft diameter. There's nothing you can do about the dog but you can avoid shaft issues by using lighter line and not locking down the drag.If you find a 706 the first thing you want to do is take off the spool to see if it is scraping inside the rotor. If there is that means a bent shaft of maybe a worn pinion bearing.

I had picked up one last year(706z) and think it might have a warn bearing....shaft seems slightly loose(movement)....don't think it is bent....and I know nothing about them yet....I was going to use it instead of my almost new one this year.Bill..............

Re: Best Buy?
Fin I like that Idea.... I also will just keep my 704z until it dies and then go with a Stradic or Stella afterwards. Thank you for the info regarding these reels. :headbang: :headbang:

Re: Best Buy?
i think obie was the one that made this conversion after a broken arm on his 706 and james had a nice conversion outta a vs arm and roller. after fishing and watching you might see an idea of ur own..

Honestly considering the severity of this freeze, I believe we came out OK. Sure, LOTS of dead silver mullet were seen but relatively few gamefish when compared to the losses seen in Texas,...
