Personally, I don't think you want to confuse him with too much at first. Important to remember that a young pup has an attention span of about 2 to 5 minutes and develops slowly. At times you will see zero attention - that's a definite caution time for you. Easy to get frustrated. There will be times he just flat doesn't want to work.
Pointing is a natural instinct. If it is in him he will show it. You can always develop it later after he is solid on his retrieving.
just remember - you're essentially training an 3-4 yr old child. Sometimes they just say, "NO!" and eat the crayons.Screw it. Let's ride.

I know nothing about training, but I had a friend many years ago that had a pair of retrievers and a house boat in the delta.
When he would pick up his shotgun, one would run to the boat and the other would dive under the bed to retrieve dust bunnies!Last edited by FinChaser; 09-07-2014 at 12:27 PM.

this is max. we had him in the dove field at 4 months.
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
