No one with half a brain will be in the water if this things comes in, but then I know some surfers, and well.....

We're in the cone of death, I wonder if Weather Channel Jim as flown into Mobile yet????

No kids this trip, and the kids aren't too much like kids anymore anyway (except for the Bank of Dad part). I can enjoy a sail cat also, so thanks for the idea. Popped a couple sharks off last trip, but did enjoy the fight. I've never written a report but will if there is anything to say. Figured a trip to J&M for fresh bait is going to be a requirement this time.

If there is one thing that kids need to learn it is how small we are, and storms are a great way to learn.

I'm an old fart (70+, been coming down since 1948) and my best memories of the coast were made after storms. There will be tidal (storm) pools behind the beach with all sorts of dead and live flotsam to explore.

Swimming in "rough" surf is an adventure and a lesson for kids as long as the adults understand and keep careful watch and a close hand. What seems rough to them can be quite manageable to us - be sure you understand rips and undertows and understand the real dangers as opposed to "fun".

How long it takes for the water to calm down is a matter of where the storm hits and how strong it becomes. Whatever else, there will be catfish. Catching catfish is as much fun for a child as any other fish if you make it so.

Edit: For a Googan, be sure you get some advice on how to handle a catfish, they can have some nasty germs on their sharp fins. When my dad or uncle was not around we would use an overhand release, slamming them down on the beach until they came off the hook - not politically correct, but hey, they're fish and we were kids.

Per the 11 pm NHC advisory: 'The Cone' has narrowed significantly, and moved a bit farther westward.
Mobile County is under a Hurricane Watch while Baldwin County is under a Tropical Storm Watch zone.
That is a 'fine line' and subject to change one way or the other before Sunday morning (of course).



One thing to consider is the timing.
Though there is still a bit of difference between the models as to the forward motion,
most predict landfall in the predawn hours of Sunday.
Astronomical high tide for the Alabama coast is about 1 am.
So IF the strongest winds arrive around then, we could see storm surge and wave heights maximized at that time.

I've been horned by a catfish before. If/when it happens again, it will be my fault for not paying attention. Sounds like the forecast is slightly better and more westward this morning.

If I had the option to postpone and make the trip one to two weeks later I would go for that. Water will have time to settle and clear up.

Tomorrow will be spent covering skylights and moving yard stuff into the shed.
Then hunker down.

There's going to be big waves and strong winds. While the storm may only be a CAT 1 when it comes ashore, if it coincides with high tide, that's just more/higher water. Add to that the FORWARD SPEED of the system and this is definitely one to hunker down for.
