Well when you have to ask....

In a nutshell they just don't follow rules, usually don't accept tips or help when offered on top of not knowing what they're doing. They're pretty easy to spot, over-sized rod and reels(usually a spinning reel upside down) with a massive chunk of squid or whole, unpeeled shrimp on a double drop rig with a 3oz pyramid sinker. Almost always around the bathroom area and just past.

That's just one type, the other, usually lacking in casting skills, are out on the end throwing lures and such and don't pay attention to where it landed while reeling their lure back along with others lines. Also not looking behind them when they cast.

Albert Einstein nailed it with his famous quote:
Googan: "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

That would qualify you as IN DANGER!

Being a "googan" has nothing to do with whether you are local or tourist.

We have our fair share of local googans. These are usually the ones who treat tourists with disrespect and call them googans to make themselves feel better and justified for being googan.

I think some of them take pride in googanism.

There are others who claim to be googan, but deep down know they are pro, but too humble to admit it.

Calling someone a googan is to say, "You, Ma'am/Sir, are pretty bad at this sport. Your Fish-Fu is NOT strong."

Be warned, that calling someone a googan means you must avoid participation in googanistic activities and live up to the standards you expect of others around you so you don't fall into that classification yourself.

That said, I'd say there is probably a little googan in us all, but some are just better at covering it up than others, or think they win by pointing the most fingers and toes.

Only in terms of 'the child within' perhaps (to misquote Paul from 1st Corinthians 13:11 ;-)
When I was a googan, I used to speak like a googan, think like a googan, reason like a googan; when I became a (fisher)man, I did away with googanish things.

Sooner or later, we all do something googan-ish.

The difference is in the intent and if an apology follows.

Like when the best intended cast gets caught by a gust of wind and crosses 1/2 the lines on the end:
A googan stands there and acts like nothing is wrong with what they did, as their bait tangles 6 or 7 lines..
A non-googan apologizes as he/she moves down the rail to quickly uncross his line from others.
Haywire, bodebum and coach like this.
