Hwy 181 usually isn't overly congested except north of Hwy 90.
There are several lights in that stretch but traffic rarely STOPS like it can on the other corridors.
Coming down on a Saturday the Beach Express may be a timesaver (over Hwy 59 or the 181 route) but IMHO it's not worth driving the extra miles east unless you are going into Orange Beach and then you still have to deal with Hwy 180 traffic.
Best bet is to try and avoid 'peak' traffic times whenever possible ;-)

We have a house that is 3 blocks from Tacky Jacks in Gulf Shores and we always take the beach express all the way to I10. Don't know if I'll live long enough to ever see it but am looking forward to the day when it goes al the way to I65.
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
