Thanks again to you guys who do the heavy lifting on this site. I'd like to say I would offer to help, but the most I could do would be bring you coffee---I have no computer skills. You are appreciated.

Coffee you say? Can you make Irish Kiss lattes, caramel machiattos, or pumpkin spice lattes? Actually, this time of year I like no fat gingerbread mochas upside down with two shots

Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years

Peaches. Next time you make a cup of coffee, add some milk and some instant hot chocolate mix in the cup. Stir and enjoy.

I'll just stick to adding irish cream to mine when I do drink it. I probably can count the number of times I have drink coffee in the past 10 years on one hand.

    Re: Banishing Spammers

For those of you who do run forums. The problem isnt people coming to your site and spamming it. The problem is the automated software designed to spam your site. There are two, but one is HORRIBLE!

Scrapebox can be bought for like $69. It scrapes the web for forums and blogs, has built in sets of IPs and can auto generate comments. People mainly use this for blog comments. But, it is also used for forums.

It works by scraping google looking for software signatures. This can be done manually as well by using advanced search operators in google. Most people dont know this.

An advanced search operator might look like this: inurl:fishing powered by wordpress. In that search, you are telling google to return results with fishing in the website name and is run with Wordpress, which is a blogging software.

Another search might be intitle:tackle -inurl:football intext:hooks. This would return results in google that had tackle in the title of the website, but does not have football in the website name and has hooks in the text of the site. That was an example. But, you can tell google what kind of tackle you are looking for and remove untargeted results.

Basically, you can use these to really narrow your search down to find what you are looking for. Also, spammers use them against you if you own a website Here is a short list http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators.html This is great for research.

The next piece of software is called Xrumer. This thing can literally spam 100,000's of thousands of sites in no time. It sucks and is the source of most of your spam. You can go to a site life www.fiverr.com and get a blast for $5. People sell this as a service. It is impossible to fight because of the massive number of ip's and the software's ability to create a user on a forum. Make posts. Fill out all the profile information. And make posts using spun content. ALL AUTOMOTATED!

Our friends on another forum have this problem and havent figured it out, yet. We fight it by banning IPs and some other stuff behind the scenes in the code which limits the ability for it to work. We get about 1 Xrumer spam user every day or two. That is nothing! Some forums get hundreds.

The best way to defend yourself is to deny IPs ranges in your control panel. I did that with the old host and got it down to almost ZERO.

Like I said, you guys never see spam nor the spammers cause we kill them fast. We have a lot of security measures in the background to stop bots from crawling and getting personal info as well. You will see bots from MSN, Google and Facebook, but those are okay. Those are just here indexing content on their search engines. And yes, facebook is developing a search engine.
