i found a 650ss in my step dads barn along with 3 other penns, some of which are very large and have harness hooks on them. he gave them to me under the condition that i clean them up and use them. SO is the 650 a decent reel?

I like mine (6500ss) for the king's ....never been spooled but have come close, with 17lb line....the spool was a little short on capacity too, after so many break offs and cuts

In my opinion all the older Penn Spinfishers that are 'Made In The USA' are good to very good for their price range, better than many comparable counterparts, new or old.
I have and will continue to pay as much or more for an old Penn 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation Spinfisher on eBay, Craigslist or elsewhere, than buy a brand new 'Made In China' Spinfisher.
I did break down and try a Battle 5000, it has already malfunctioned once and was worthless until fixed, I no longer trust it.
    I've never had a 1st or 3rd generation Spinfisher malfunction, and I fish six of those... 704Z, 4300ss, 5500ss, 7500ss, (2) 8500ss and a newly acquired 9500ss.

    Yeah, I'm a Penn fanatic.
Next on my acquisition list are a old 115L 9/0 and 113HLW 4/0 and a 113HN 4/0 Baja Special is on my wish list.

Thats odd Chile. I have two Sargus 8000s. The only problem I have had with them in two years was the drag clicker spring breaking, and I have been pretty rough on them too.

Whats odd, I don't get ya, did I say the other Penn models suck, are prone to malfunction or some such?
Nope, just my opinion of the Spinfisher series.
