I forgot to talk about your bass gear. It should work just fine. You can catch plenty of pompano, slot reds, trout, whiting etc. with it. I would cast just in front of the bar and have a blast.
If you should hook into a big fish, it might strip your spool before you can stop it, but it would be a fun couple of minutes.Remember Duane Allman

couple thoughts
- pier fishing and surf casting are different
when #PierPounder was showing you the ropes, what gear was he using? (that's what you should be using)
if you do hook a big fish from the surf, you'll wish you had an 8ft rod w/ moderate flex to help you bring it in.
