Re: Penn reel for pier fishing?
The fathom would probably work ok, just not that big of one, get like a 20 or 25 for the pier if that's what you want. It will hurt your casting ability some using a level-wind but whatever floats your boat.

Re: Penn reel for pier fishing?
Why spend that much?
A Penn Long Beach 66 or 9M should do the job nicely.
That was 'standard pier equipment' back in the 1970s.
I'm partial to my Penn Squidder though ;-) :fishing: :headbang:(RETIRED) mostly.

Re: Penn reel for pier fishing?
Since you are a bass fisherman I give it to you in bass terms. Most people use a spinner because of the casting ability and more water covered more opportunities to catch a fish. That reel is not meant to be cast like a bait caster. that type of reel is good for trolling or a bottom dropping. There are plenty post on here about this topic. If momma gave the OK I would call J&M and see what kind of setup I could get for the money.

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
