wondering about flounder ect.
Hello, Im here for a month or so and plan on doing quite a bit of fishing. I live on a tiny island off the coast of New England, where I fish for fluke and flounder alot. Was curious as to the flounder here on the gulf, are they present this time of year? If so do you use squid as bait? Also I know its not the season for Blue Crab, but can you still net a few in the area? Also any information on what other species of fish are prevelant this time of year and bait used would really help me alot. Thank you to anyone who answers this. I really appreciate it!!!!

Re: wondering about flounder ect.
An occasional flounder can be caught from the GSPPier in the winter but they will be difficult to target until warmer weather brings the migration back to the coast.
Nevertheless I catch a few each winter incidental to fishing for sheepshead with live shrimp at the pier or Perdido Pass.
Blue crabs are pretty much the same scenerio.
There may be a FEW males active in the backwaters during warm weather periods through the winter.
But they are much more active and prevelant in the warmer water months (May-Nov).
However the speckled crabs can be found along the gulf beaches in winter and an angler with the right gear in the right place and time could catch a mess over the course of the day.
FRESH squid might do OK on flounder, croakers, drum and such during the winter but generally it only catches catfish.
Hope this helps!

Re: wondering about flounder ect.
best wait till spring, but if you won't be here till then i cant say much, if you can wait till spring then fish live bullminows or finger mullet with about a 1/4oz egg weight with a small j hook around the pillings, jig the bait from time to time, best in my opinion to use 10-20lb braided line. if mono, use 10-15lb.wish you luck! :fishing:
I figure it this way, if everyone in the world had a lie clock, whose hands moved once every time they lied. You could use any politicians lie clock as a ceiling fan.

Re: wondering about flounder ect.
I caught two in mid-December when the weather was warm, dragging live shrimp; not real big but legal... one chased into the extreme shallows, i caught him closer to the pier house than i thought was possible! It was pretty neat because i saw him chase it and then settle into the sand... i kept bouncing the shrimp around for a couple of minutes before he finally pounced on it and i still jumped! its amazing how they can bury up. good thing about dragging shrimp this time of year is trash fish don't bother you too bad, less you count redfish. I had one over slot grab my shrimp later...boy was i disappointed when i found out it wasn't a doormat flounder! You can also try the jetty's but they are hard to fish. I hear they account for bigger flounder in the winter there. I would try but its a difficult and slightly dangerous place to fish. One thing about it if you're dragging for them on the pier, you'll pretty much be the only one, so you won't have much competition!

Honestly considering the severity of this freeze, I believe we came out OK. Sure, LOTS of dead silver mullet were seen but relatively few gamefish when compared to the losses seen in Texas,...
