IMHO a good 'starter' setup would a Penn Battle 5000 on a 7 foot medium action rod.
If you put 12# or 14# mono on it, you should have enough line to king fish and it'll still be 'light' enough to use for the other fish you mentioned.
Or with the $$ under your budget you might purchase a second spool to have one with 12# and one with 14#. Just thinkin ;-)

I would go with what pounder said. That Battle will last you for years to come. John sells some Profile rods they come in 7and 8 foot llengths. For around $45-50 they are hard to beat. Total cost you are looking around $160.
Penn reels are durable, Chef, not arguing that point at all. The first okuma avenger I bought is now four years old. I don't fish every day and it might have already worn out by now if I did, but its still going and the drag is still as smooth as the day I unpacked it. Got it for $39 bucks on ebay with free shipping. Sometimes I look at all these reels made in China and wonder if they don't all come from the same factory, the parts and designs are so similar. :-\
That said, I can't imagine you going wrong doing what #r says in any fishing situation. You might find a better way, but what he tells you will be a good, reliable way.
Rich, I've seen those Okumas @ BPS and they do seem like a 'reliable, cheaper' alternative to the Penn.

In my (short) retail experience @ BPS, I have met and helped a LOT of newbies and first timers pick out a reel, rod or combo.
I have learned it is a unique process for each angler and for each purchase.
But for folkses to have the ability to pick up a rod and reel (combo) is shrewd marketing by the manufacturers.
They instantly 'know' if it is right for them and you can usually see it in their face. :banana:
And that makes my job so easy ;-) :yay:
Of course that experience is often even stronger when a person 'knows' they want a particular reel or rod and we need to find a 'balanced' match for it. :wall:
It seems they often are willing to pay more for getting 'what they want', especially if it is a widely recognized name brand. (more shrewd marketing ;-)
... and if that's not enough to please them, in steps 'high end' specialty products, custom rod building, reel modifications, etc. :headbang:
Afterall, the customer is ALWAYS right :bow:

[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]I bought a bright yellow Okuma Fin Chaser Combo (yes) from J & M several years ago.
Fished it hard for a long time and it took a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. It still makes a trip to the pier with me now and then.
I have a couple others and have no complaints.
Just go to J & M and they can set you up with what will work for you.

All the marketing ploys you mentioned are just teasers. A wise retailer knows what bait we consumers will take every time. We will unknowingly spend every last cent we have just to prove to the retailer, our peers and even ourselves that we are right.
we bought the penn fierce combos from j&m that were recommended here. they did the job and didn't break the bank.
