Thread: Water Conditions and help

First off, I've never fished the pier but am thinking about giving it a shot early Sat. or Sun. morning. Usually fish the lagoon by kayak since it's convenient to the house or off the beach.

How are the water conditions? Last trip down the algae was so bad at Mobile St. I made one cast.

If anyone is planning on fishing early this weekend and wants to help a newbie, let me know. I may hang a sign that says "lost" on my cart

I've only fished it once myself, and only have half clue about anything besides the basics.
But I'll be down again this Saturday morning, if ya see this mug, say "Hi".
We can try our luck together and see whats biting.

I plan on targeting Kings, Spanish and Spades from the Octi, if that don't work, maybe move inshore and try live baits on the bottom for a Bull Red if lucky.

The algae seems to have disapated, or for sure thinned a LOT since last week.
That's at least one good side effect of last weekend's rough water. :headbang:

You should have plenty of company on the pier this weekend.
Just observe and try to do whatever the folks who are catching fish are doing. :fishing:

Thanks. What's the secret to catching spadefish?

They have a relatively small mouth and are 'nibblers'.
Once you get them 'chummed up' and feeding in one spot, use a small single hook (#6 ) that you can bury in a piece of shrimp less than an inch long ;-)
And give them a couple of seconds to suck the bait in and turn away to set the hook themselves.
And use only enough weight to get the bait in the water and feel the bite.
On a windless day that may only be splitshot or two.
Add more weight to compensate for more breeze.
