    Tropical storms

Does a approaching storm or a storm nearby hurt or help fishing down there? I wondered if the Rougher surf effected anything?

Yeah, it definitely affects the bottom and the fishing.
Whether that helps or hurts just depends on perspective and the surrounding circumstances.
Often in the past I've noted IF there is a good bite going on a storm will 'kill it' or at least slow things down.
But in the long run any slow down should improve in a few days.
These long period swells really have power to stir the bottom and can reconfigure the sandbars.
They can also 'flush out' the June Grass that's been plaquing the shallows.
Also tropical storms often have a lingering affect on the overall weather pattern and prevailing winds that signal changes in the pattern of a bite.

I walked out on the pier this morning and Ernesto sends his regards with a 3' swell and a crashing surf.Water viz less than a foot.

I didn't even make it out of the parking lot. There was a general exodus of fishermen who were reporting the same muddy water as John G and that there were no biting fish in that water. I think I'll wait until things calm down. Even the pelicans looked hungry this morning.
