Surf Rod/Reel setup question to Pier #er
I have questions for Pier #er. What is your basic rod/reel/line setup for surf/wade fishing? I am looking for something I can throw baits and lures for redfish, spanish, blues, trout. And if I hook a king, I would have a chance to land it. Also, are your guide rates per person? Thank you!

Thanks for your questions.
My 'standard plugging' outfit is a 7 foot medium action spinning rod with an 040 size reel with 8# mono.
It also does double duty as a medium bottom rig setup for whiting ;-)

If you're looking for something that will conceivably handle a king or jack crevelle you could 'step up' to a 050 series reel and put 10# line on it or use braided line on a smaller reel for more line capacity.
I prefer the lighter setup because 99% of what I am going to hook into fits that realm and actively fishing with a heavier outfit reduces my stamina in the surf.
My rates are the same for one person or a group, but having more people degrades the amount of time I get to spend with each and seems to lessen the probability of success. :fishing:

I have been surf casting for about ten years. I use an eight foot medium rod with a Penn Fierce line with 20lb mono. Beyond that, there are tons of different combos to get fish on.
