Surf fishing, between beach and first sandbar?
What type of setup would I need for fishing just behind the breakers out to the first sandbar, where the whiting and other fish are?
- series reel, 2000,3000,4000
- # of line
- # of leader if needed
- type of rig
- size and type of hook
- rod length and strength
I am looking for something to cover all the bases, as close as possible, from soaking bait to fishing jigs and lures.

I fish a Penn 3000 with 10 pound test 7ft ml rod.but I think an ultra light would work fine for pomps, flounder, whiting.fish finder rig, pompano rig, float or live line a shrimp.sand fleas and fish bites should work too

I use a 2500 series reel with 8# mono on a 7-8' med. rod. 1/4 to 1 oz egg sinker, small black swivel, 12" 12# mono or flouro leader and a plain old #4 hook.

I use a 4000 reel with 10# or 12# line. The heavier line is easier for my aging eyes to see. Use the same mono as on your reel for leader. A Carolina rig with a 1oz egg sinker and #4 or #2 Kahle hook works well until the surf gets rough or there's a good current. In that case, I'd use a one or two ounce pyramid sinker with a three-way swivel and the same hook. The 7' rod is fine for catching fish, but a longer rod helps with longer casts and keeps your line up out of the waves.
Good fishing.

I have Okuma Avenger 55AB and a spool of 12# mono, no rod. Wondering if this is too much,is the reason for my post.
Thank you All for your input.

That would be good for bull reds or kings but for surf I think a smaller setup would be more fun and Wont wear you out throwing a jig.

Surf Combo
Rod: 8'-10', 6-12# line, 3/8oz-2oz, Med with a Fast Action.
Reel: 3000-5000 class reel spooled with 10 or 12# line.
A combo somewhere in there will keep you catching almost anything inside the first bar, even Bull Reds, Big Uglies and Jacks.Ragnar Benson:

most days you will be good with lighter tackle but its always helpful to have gear that will handle 4-6oz or more my best days from the beach are when its overcast or rain and big crashers. like 4-6 footers lots of surface suds you need to hold bottom and able to cast heavies without blowing up your gear. plus that type of weather you wont have interence with swimmers. thats the time to take full advantage of the surf
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
