The very best locations in the surf would be areas of very little human activity. Coconut oil and sun block leave a bad taste in the water.
Do people actually get in the water there? All I have read about are sharks, stingrays and jellyfish.

The best spots are where ever you find structure in the surf. A deep trough or hole, a cut, point, drop off and the edges of rips. Places where the bar is close enough to cast onto the front/back or top.
Passes, points and submerged structure.
Perdido Pass, Little Lagoon Pass, Ft. Morgan Point, the rock pile, Dixie Bar, the drop off, concrete blocks or pier at Ft. Morgan.
Just about any pier, buoy or etc.
You forgot all about our alligators, snapping turtles and venomous snakes with bad attitudes.

What else would all these things nasty critters have to prey on if people did not get into the water ? That's why they stay so close to the beaches . Drawn by an easy meal !
And they go down easier with all that suntan lotion smeared on ;-)
Thanks you everyone. You are very helpful. From what you have read I'm either going to go to the end of Mobile St. or Fort Morgan Point. Do those spots sound good?
Don't forget mosasaurs. And killer rabbits. It's a wonder anyone survives and day at the beach.

Either of those two locations would suit me if I could be there now. For me, I guess, the deciding factor would be which location has the fewest swimmers, especially for species like whiting and flounder. We have caught pompano, catfish, ladyfish, puffers, baby jacks and many other specie while a few folks were in the surf, but not so much when there were crowds at "the swimming hole" having their good times.
Pompano caught today in surf near little lagoon outlet.
