    State records

My little "discussion" with Viking Guy did bring up a question. Why are some varieties of fish listed in the records then a lot of them are not?

I have wondered about this as well and am looking into it.

My first guess would be some are protected species and not allowed (and some any longer).

Alternately, others may not be recognized as a common Alabama waters fish, yet may be recognized elsewhere.

That said, I sent an email and letter to the sources at large to ask about species not listed, but caught, to see if they can be added if submitted upon catching.

It is possible that no one has taken the time to submit certain species or varieties and that is why they aren't listed. In other cases, species diversity "might" get lumped together. Hopefully they'll answer my letter and shed some light on it.

I think it has also to do with what IGFA recognizes, but don't quote me on that...

I can answer this! For most of those species, no one has applied for the state record. When we found out about that, my boss's son filled out papers for black nose and bull sharks and got both those records. He still has the black nose, but someone bumped him on the bull shark. I keep thinking about sending in the papers for my hammerhead from last year's ADSFR, but I can't quite get motivated to sit down and do it... not much of a certificate chaser.

This is strictly AL state records, not IGFA stuff.
