The Stan Mahoney Youth Fishing Rodeo, organized by Riviera Utilities and the Wolf Bay Watershed Watch, will be held Oct. 22 at Barber Marina across the ICW from Orange Beach.
The rodeo is for kids in two divisions, ages 3-9 and 10-16. Trophies will be handed out as kids try to catch the largest and most fish in eight categories. The rodeo begins at 6 a.m. and all contestants must have their fish ready for the noon weigh-in.
Categories are
speckled trout, redfish, bass, pinfish, sheepshead, catfish and croaker or spot. There is also an open category that will include any other fish a kid may bring in.
A lunker trophy in each division will be presented to the kids who bring in the heaviest finned fish, excluding stingrays and sharks. A Master Fishermen award will be presented in each age group who caches the most total pounds of finned fish, again, excluding stingrays and sharks.
Fishing from the bank or a pier is allowed, though not at Barber Marina.
Paradise Marine will provide a 13-foot Carolina Skiff boat, 9.9-horsepower Suzuki motor and boat trailer to help raise money for the efforts of Wolf Bay Watershed Watch youth activities. Any child who enters the rodeo will receive one ticket for the drawing. Blue Water Ships Store has also donated a kayak that each child has an opportunity to win. Many gift items and fishing gear will be given away as door prizes to the kids.
Tickets cost $10 or $15 the day of the event and are on sale at Riviera Utilities, Paradise Marine, Blue Water Ships Store and from any Wolf Bay Watershed Watch Board member. Pre-registration and consent forms are also available at
www.rivierautilities.com,
www.wolfbaywatch.org and on the Stan Mahoney Youth Fishing Rodeo Facebook page. For more information, contact Tommy Patterson at 251-955-1855.
I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
