Spanish
Whats up with Spanish in January? I don't think I can ever remember Spanish this time of the year.

Re: Spanish
I can remember it happening one year in the 1970s.
There was a guy from Gulf Shores written about in the Mobile paper (by Buddy Smith) that caught a spanish mackerel in 18 consecutive months. :headbang:
Note: I believe it was the winter of 1972-1973

Re: Spanish
I will say it again;***Water temp.***;last week water temps at Navarre were in the upper 60s,yes warm enough for kings;but no one was fishing for them, and haven't since the bobos started biteing in Nov.If it stays warm (loop current is stronger than the offshore winds of the cold fronts)we will contenue to catch them. There is a problem ,some are already aware of it,when it comes to cobia ;and it is true with our other migratory fish: they don't get pushed completely out of the area, to have the schools return in mass that give us the runs we enjoy each spring. The fish will be there, but scattered.

Re: Spanish
When you talk "spring" generally how early can you figure?
Is the end of March part of it?
and
At the end of March (I know it all depends on each years weather) where are my best chances at fish Okaloosa, Navarre or Gulf Shores?

We went in late march last year. Seems like everybody had cobia on their mind. No kings for me. Caught enough spainish to eat a couple times. Ladyfish, blues and hardtail kept it interesting. Moved to the octi for a red and lots of sharks.
I cant speak for navarre or okaloosa. Never been. GSPP is usually fishy for something to reel in but not always the targeted species. Water clarity was bad when i was there. I hear it is usually better to the east.

DEFINITELY by the end of March!
The Vernal Equinox is March 20, 2012.
In a 'warm' winter/spring transition year we will see the spanish migration in full force by this date.
Some years even earlier (by a week or two), but in 'cooler' years the main push can be delayed a few weeks.
As the time approaches watch the reports from the east (Panama City Bch, Ft Walton, Navarre & Pensacola Bch) @ http://www.panhandlepierfishing.com
Then watch the weather to see where might be the better opportunities for spanish for the time you will be fishing.

Re: Spanish
I don't wish hard luck on cobia fishermen, but I guess I like the warm water fishing.
