I have a couple of Penn reels and thought I would try a Shimano. What model is suggested in the 4000 class spinning Shimano?

The Sahara is a good reel in the upper mid range. Stradics are really nice for a little more money.

I have a Sienna that's 10 years old and still going strong.

I have one of the old model Baitrunners, 6500. Have had it for 10+ years with no complaints. Also have a Sahara 4000, probably 5-6 years old. It is still in working condition. Handle can be a little stiff. I don't use it much any more because I have since bought 2 Stradics. Love them both. It will be tough for me to venture outside of Shimano when buying reels from now on.

Being a guide i have to balance $$ and quality and what works best for me. I fish 2500 Siennas EXCLUSIVELY! I have tried the Sonora, Solstice, Sedona, Syncopate (my least favorite because of anti reverse), and Sahara. Most expensive is the Sahara usually $79 or so. Constantly broke gears. Sonoras didn't cast well due to the fact they didn't have a tapered spool whn I used them. Sedona was OK but broke gears also. Solstice had the reels break off the real seat time after time.
For $29...the Siennas have been almost bullet proof. I have some that have now been in service 5-6 years. NOW...the lower end Shimano reels all come with just enough lube in them to make them smooth for about 10 trips then the "handle gets sticky which is French for the drive gears don't have any grease in them! I learned that by removing 5 screws and lubricating them well before even putting them to use is invaluable. And once a year on rainy days I break them down 8 at a time and spray them out with degreaser and relube. I put the other 8 on my rods and keep fishing. I recently was told they were going to be discontinued...got online and found them at Dick's for $19.99 and now have an extra dozen that are on the shelf.
I use 10# Momoi HiCatch and Psunami ML rods always so I can't put enough drag on it to break reels off. My fisherman aren't always as good a fisherman as some of us and can make reels do things they shouldn't.
The reel has a simple felt and washer front drag that for the money is just great. If I used 4000's I wouldn't hesitate to go get a bucket full. MY .04 cents worth!

academy currently has the shimano 4000 nexave marked down to 19.99 from 69.99 in store only. I played with one in the store and ended up buying a couple.

I have been doing some research on a new shimano reel and I am going to buy one of the new Nasci models. It is more expensive than most but it has just about all the new features that the $200 reels have. I know the cheaper reels are great this is just my choice. Nasci reels cost about $100 I may wait until spring and hope they get cheaper.
