Re: Shimano Clarus UltraLight 5'0" Rod - The Ultimate King Fishing Experience
who ever said anything about using a ling rod and cranking em in? i was saying a more balance combo would make using the small rod worth while...even 6 lb has plenty of strength around the pilings... all you gotta do is freespool.... and its definately not out of the question to land them on 4 either...

Oh, yeah, i can agree with that. I was using 6# on Friday, and have used 4# at prior times on longer UL poles.
What you will find on a shorter pole is the fight is taking place at the reel rather than having a rod to support some of the shock. Therefore a lighter line will get treated differently at shorter distances. I will keep toning it down until i find the perfect balance.
Another thing is the speed at which a fish needs to be landed once brought in. It's OK to fight a fish awhile away from the pier, but once it is at the pylons, having more control will assist in making a quick landing.
Memorial Day weekend is packed, and people would get annoyed if you were struggling to control a 20# fish at the pylons because your topshot was only 4-6#s.
Hope that makes more sense. It becomes more clear once the little toy gets used on a biggun.
