    sheepshead hook

I was reading an article in "Great Days Outdoor" magazine about sheepshead fishing. They recommend a Kahle hook. It looks like a circle hook to me. Is anyone familiar with a "Kahle" hook?

    Similar, same style.

I personally don't like that for the convicts. They have a hard/toothy mouth with a subtle bite. I personally use a #10 treble.

My opinion, the benefit of a circle or kahle hook would be catching the other bites besides sheepies.

To each its own though, not everyone wets a line the same way.

    Re: sheepshead hook

HR introduced me to the kahle hook in the early 1990s and I have used them in certain situations ever since.

You're right about it looking like a circle hook.
It's a kindof hybrid between the j and circle hooks designed to set in the corner of the fish's mouth as it turns away.
And like a circle you do NOT 'set' the hook either but let the fish tighten the line first.

I do use them for sheepshead with medium sized live shrimp carolina rigged and found they work well with ghost shrimp too.
For me the hookup ratio with them is a little better than the single j hook under most conditions.
They are great to use under a float too.

IMHO the smaller sizes are best (#8 or #6).
I use nothing bigger than a #4 kahle (but that's just me ;-)
    (RETIRED) mostly.

just dont use them for whiting. i lose more kahle hooks to whiting swallowing them to their stomachs and having to tear up the hook to get it out.

Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years
