Shark Reels
Im going to start land based shark fishing this spring and summer. I think a 9/0 senator would be good but i was wondering if a 12/0 might be better. The bait would be out about 300 yds and i'm not sure if 60# or 80# would break from sand and surf abrasion. Do y'all think i should get the 12/0 for the bigger size line or would a 9/0 be good. The 12/0 is over twice as much as the 9/0 so that is annoying but it is about twice as big. They should really make an in between size. i haven't seen a 9/0 wide but that might be good

There is a fairly new thread on land base shark fishing that is full of great information. Use the forum search feature to find it. Dutch shared a lot of knowledge on the subject.

Im not a fan of the 9/0 senators. Id personally get a 6/0 wide. And reel size depends on what size sharks you want to catch. Black tips and spinners you dont need anything over a 6/0 wide with some braid backing and mono top shot. Big bulls, hammers and tiger sharks id definitely go no smaller than a 12/0 and 100lbs line.

Thanks y'all. The bigger ones is what I'm goin after. Ill probably start out with catching big blacktips or mid sized bulls around 7 footers and when our team gets it in a routine we will start dropping big baits out further. They do have 10/0 reels out there but they were discontinued and thats why i haven't seen any. Ive decided on a used 12/0 when i can find one.

You'll be happy with the 12/0. Upgrade the drag, throw a few hundred yards of braid backing on then as much 100lbs mono as it can hold. I personally always used a 15ft +- section of 500lbs mono between my main line and steel leader. When you hook a big bull, hammer or tiger and they start taking line, you dont want your main line (100lbs) to be rubbing against the rough body and tail with a tight drag. Just adds a little more durability and less break offs

This might be exciting then the rest type of fishing
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
