    Schools of redfish

do redfish school at other locations like they do at the Gulf State pier here lately? If so, where and at what times of the year?

    Thanks,

    David

the reds don’t school at the pier, they pass by the pier in schools. If you do an internet search for redfish, there are tons of photos and videos of schooling redfish.
The pier provides a good high place to see them coming and feed em while they are going by. Sometime they are up and down the pier, sometimes just in spots
at least i think that is how it werks

    Re: Schools of redfish

The schooling behavior we see from the GSPPier is not much different than the behavior of their cousins at any of the other gulf piers or passes in the area (even the south east).
They school up in huge 'aggregates' like this from the longshore sandbar out to the edge of the continental shelf.
It's the presence of baitfish schools they encounter that provide the spectaular blitzes pier fishers are most familiar with :headbang:
Check these videos for a perspective of what is going on vs what we see on the pier...

I like the conservative limit TOO. I like to see them schooling. If TOO many are taken, some of that will disapear.

If the population gets too thick disease will destroy the population...Red snapper population might be a good example of diseased fish soon.
Usually when I refer to limits i should throw in the part about recreational limits are low but commercial limits are up.

    Re: Schools of redfish

The big reds are the breeders and they are not the best eating size anyway. Before the blackened redfish craze came along, they were not all that popular a commercial species in the larger sizes but the numbers went way down and fast from that pressure.
