GULF SHORES, Alabama -- The Gulf State Park Pier may soon offer beer at its concession area as the City Council is poised to vote on allowing alcohol sales there.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as applied for a special license to serve alcohol. A public hearing will be held Monday, Nov. 5, during a special-called council meeting, the first of the new term.
Mayor Robert Craft said there was no push back about the application at Monday's work session.
"We’ll vote on it next week," Craft said. "We didn’t have anybody speaking against it. It wouldn’t be that unusual for us to vote to allow that. I don’t see that as being an issue."
The pier, which is 1,540 feet long, opened July 23, 2009. The old pier had to be rebuilt after Hurricane Ivan destroyed it in 2004.
The current rules and regulation do not allow alcohol on the pier.

Re: Say it ain't so...
I generally don't mix alcohol and fishing, because I take my fishing pretty seriously. I'm guessing there have been problems over on the panhandle piers related to allowing alcohol? There has to be an enforcable policy to disallow innebriation (i guess public intoxication is already against the law), else I can see the potential for tempers flaring. Fortunately, I haven't encountered an alcohol related issue in my limited time fishing the panhandle piers.

Can we move this to the general forum so more people and search engines can see it?

Mike the pier guy told me a couple days ago they were looking a putting a bar in the north east corner of the covered deck at the pier entrance. Sales there but no alcohol allowed on the pier.
Screw it. Let's ride.

Can they drink then go on the pier?
Lots of situations this year would have been a whole lot worst had alcohol been involved.

The fact that there is no alcohol allowed on the pier is the reason i drive from Pensacola to fish in gulf shores. I hope this does not pass. I have seen what it does on the Pensacola pier.

^^^ I agree, but I must say Navarre Pier is an amazing pier and they serve alcohol. Strange thing, I have no problem with it and no problem taking my family there to fish. It just seems like the type of people that come to our pier are a little different.
