Thread: review of daiwa bg 5000

Just wondering if anyone has tried the bg5000 with the manual bail return. Its got a fast retrieve that I think would be pretty useful.

I bought a BG4500, smaller size, still a pretty good line capacity. It’s been used very little, very little activity the last time I had it on the pier and I have no use for it up here unfortunately. So, this will not be much of a review. Very smooth reel(as are my other BG’s), comparable to my Battles. It will take awhile to get used to the manual bail, given the limited use and I don’t care for it.

I was thinking about it for larger topwater lures in tailrace areas, and maybe for the pier. The specs show that the 4500 and 5000 weight only differs by half an ounce (if I remember correctly) and the 5000 has a significantly faster retrieve. As long as I start the day flipping the bail manually and don't switch back and forth I don't have a problem with the manual bail. I have the 4000 and love it for stripers.

When I got it in the mail it was larger then expected more like a 6000 series reel, but fished extremely well for the money, I like it much better then the battles that stayed home....60&70....should have brought them to sell along with other reels I thinned out

A special thanks to you for your time and all your helpful advice on pier fishing rigs and equipment. Got rid of the crap stuff in my tackle. Bought a pier cart and a lot of other good stuff at J&M today. I will be back. Hope to catch a king someday.

PS: Met Chillinfish today. Great guy! He helped my wife land her first fish off a pier today.

J&M was the best place to go, wish catching was better, I missed good bites some days not being there for them..... early and late ....hard anymore starting at the crack of daylight to dark that night, makes for an awful long day.....sounds like you might be a regular pier fisher couple
