    Red tide status?

    Bum news tonight warned of red tide problems likely for next two weeks for. Spring break trippers. Any local input? Thanks. Local Birmingham stations get it wrong. Sometimes.

    Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission sent this bulletin at 03/11/2016 03:18 PM ESTKarenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, persists in background to low concentrations in several areas in Southwest Florida. In addition, background concentrations of K. brevis were observed in 2 samples collected from Northwest Florida. One sample was collected alongshore of Escambia County and the other was collected offshore of Dixie County.
    Fish kills have been reported in multiple locations between southern Collier County and northern Monroe County in Southwest Florida. Forecasts for Southwest Florida by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tidesshow northern movement of surface waters and minimal net movement of bottom waters between Pinellas and northern Monroe counties over the next 3 days.
    This information, including maps and reports with additional details, is also available on the FWRI Red Tide website. The website also provides links to additional information related to the topic of Florida red tide including satellite imagery, experimental red tide forecasts, shellfish harvesting areas, the FWC Fish Kill Hotline, the Florida Poison Information Center (to report human health effects related to exposure to red tide), and other wildlife related hotlines.

    We are smelling what seems to be that on Pensacola BCH in the last few days.

    Another national championship ROLL TIDE ROLL. Maybe wrong red tide. How many is that they come so fast it's hard to keep up with

    How long is this expected to go on? It better not ruin my trip in a few weeks. Seriously though, is this just bacteria in the ocean?

    Red tide organisms are always in the Gulf, as noted in the press release:

    "background concentrations of K. brevis were observed in 2 samples collected from Northwest Florida"

    If the organisms are at "background concentrations", they have no impact on fish & shellfish and you are NOT going to smell it, get watery eyes, etc...
    Its only when there is a population explosion ("bloom") and they reach a certain concentration do they cause problems.

    And its not just bacteria that cause Red Tide blooms. There are dinoflagellates, algae and other plankton types that cause them as well.

    This time of year I would be much more worried about a late season cold front screwing up your trip to the beach.
