    Real Help.

My sweet and lovely wife has a Penn 4400 SS, that she bought in '91 at the old J&M store when we were on our honeymoon. Last May, out at Ft. Morgan, she was pulling in a nice red and the reel started clanking and messing up. The fish was C&R, but the reel seemed shot. Got home to Boaz and I opened it up, and couldn't find nothing wrong, except the anti-reverse doesn't work. She really loves her Penn and Ugly Stick combo, having used it all our married life. Any suggestions? We will be at Ft. Morgan in May, I would like to be her hero and have her outfit ready to rock and roll. Can anyone help?

Ive had a couple of those both broke in same way after a big fish. If i remember right ,under the rotor part of the anti reverse is part of the main housing, and there is a small knob cast into it that broke off . The only way to fix it is a new main housing if this is what happened. Go to penn parts( scotts bait and tackle) and order the housing. It could also be a bad antirevers dog spring .

Can't tell what may have broke, nothing fell out when I broke it down on the dining table. ( Covered by an old towel, you know? ) I'll pull it apart again and have a closer look. Thank you for the tip, Slandeerhunter. BTW, I may should have asked about this on DIY. Say oops.

If the antireverse isn't working it sounds like your dog AR dog and spring are probably suspect. You'll need to follow the tutorials below to get the rotor off in order to properly diagnose if you feel comfortable doing the repairs. Just be careful of the little springs, they have a bad habit of flying off into kingdom come.

I figure it this way, if everyone in the world had a lie clock, whose hands moved once every time they lied. You could use any politicians lie clock as a ceiling fan.

    Re: Real Help.

A tutorial is definetely called for. The schematics at Penn are great, but only for learning part numbers. I really appreciate this tip! Thank you, Dutch. I will let y'all know how I make out with the reel. Really love to see my sweet and lovely keep her "heirloom", hauling in flounders, pomps, and those big reds that I get to clean, cook and help eat. I'll post my progress at DIY, where I should have started this. Thanks so much.

Why not take it to a tackle shop and have it fixed or ship it back to J&M and pick it up when you come down in May?

Thanks, Slanddeerhunter. Those tute were terrific. No idea they were out there! I am now giving real consideration to Mr. John's suggestion about letting a pro fix it. Tho that could adversley impact my manliness, sorta like stopping to ask for directions. I have rebuilt all my Penn SS reels, over the years but this is stumping me. What's an average cost, Mr. John? We always buy circle hooks and swivels at J&M anyway, so that would work well for us. By the way, what ever happened to the African Grey? My sweet and lovely wife loved that bird. We had to miss a couple of years, and by then the new building was up.
