I have a 8ft custom king rod from gulf breeze with a stradic 6000. I have caught numerous kings off a boat but worried about getting spooled off the pier. I use braid on the boat but I see it's not cool to use braid on the peir. So here is my question I want a smaller reel that will hold alot of mono , any ideas? Oh yea it's been 10 years or better since I've fished off a peir can't wait till Friday when I can get down there.
Any reel that will hold about 300 yards of 15lb mono will work Just depends on how much you're wanting to spend.
I have been very satisfied with my Okuma avenger 65. They make several models with a baitfeeding option which is probably helpful. My only beef is that it ain't made in the USA. The regular Okumas can be bought for less than $50. Cabelas has a salt water reel in the same range. When you only make a few trips a year it's hard to spend big bucks. Especially so since gas and room prices are what they are. If it has a good drag and holds 300+ yards of 15 lb test it will do the job.
