Re: proper way to rig a live shrimp

There's several "correct" ways to hook a live shrimp Dave.
Under the 'horn' is popular as is thru the tail, it just depends... :-\
The best method depends on the species you are after, the conditions that day (or night), your tactics and tackle.

You want your hook to match the (average) size shrimp you have for bait and a circle hook isn't a necessity, but it can help in certain conditions.
Most folks use small treble hook (like a #10 or #8).

    Hope this helps!

I assume your talking about speck fishing...

I generally use a #8 treble hook, hooking the shrimp just under their "horn". From there I use Flouro-carbon leader (12-15lb test) about 2 feet in lenght and tie to the smallest swivel I can find. They actually have come out with clear plastic swivels with a breaking strength of 30lbs! and it is virtually invisible in the water. Top that off with about 1/4 oz egg weight and then your cork...or no cork...your decision.

If you hook them in the horn just be sure to avoid that little black spot a little ways back. That's its brain (or at least a ganglion that passes for a brain) and piercing that tends to crimp their style. Be forward of that, which is harder and harder for me as I get older and see less in poor light. Avoiding the brain is a big advantage of a small hook.
    usa and chillinfish like this.
People are shocked to see sharks in the water around here.

If you see natural water taste it. If it's salty it has sharks in it. If it's fresh it has alligators in it. If it's brackish it has both.
