    pompano ????s

    Hi Guys/Gals,

I'll be coming home from work on 03/05 and I'm looking at hitting the pier ASAP! My wife wants some Pompano (her fav) and I've caught them before, but I was fishing for "anything that would bite". What's the best rigs/baits/time to fish for them? Any and all help is appreciated!

    Re: pompano ????s

I've been surf fishing for them east of Perdido Pass and having real good luck the last couple of weeks. I use fresh dead shrimp (peeled), not frozen, a two hook rig with 20# mono leader and 2 oz. pyramid sinker, also #4 kahle hooks. I fish the cut between the beach and outer bar, closer to the outer bar. I've been doing all of my fishing on an incoming tide because that's the time of day I can get to the water. The one time I fished the pier, I got my limit the same way, fishing the cut on the east side of the pier. Recently, I've had better luck with a plain rig---no beads or floats. Good luck with the high winds and neap tides.

Thanks for the info Haywire, I may try the Perdido Pass. I know this may sound dumb and be a total newbie question, but I come from MS (Only lived in GS for 2 yrs) and I know what neap tide is, but how does it have a negative effect on the fishing.

You don't have a good current to move the baitfish, crabs etc. You know how fishing can slow down on a slack tide, well neap tides can act like a series of slack tides. On the other hand, I've had pretty good fishing at times on neap tides. Go fishing and see what happens. Good luck.

I WAS WRONG about your having neap tides, anyhow. Misread your post and was thinking about this coming week. You will have normal tides when you are here.

    Re: pompano ????s

another Pomano question. Have caught several from beach but never caught any Whiting??? First two weeks of Nov. Fresh dead frozen shrimp, double
hook Pompano rig. Using the whole shrimp on both hooks, and not peeling
the shrimp. What am I doing wrong. Thanks Daryl

    Re: pompano ????s

Whiting: Use a light carolina rig, 8# spinning tackle, 1/4-1/2 oz weight depending on the surf, swivel, short 12# leader and a #4 hook. Use small chunks of shrimp, just enough to cover the hook, not the whole shrimp.
Fish from the surf, as in right at your feet in the surf, to just past where the wave begin to break. If you are casting farther than 50', you are most likely casting past the most actively feeding whiting. Sometime when the water is clear and the surf is calm, you will see them cruising the beach, sometimes within 5' of the waterline.
