Pomp help
May be in wrong place, sorry. I usually just lurk on forum, but enjoy reading daily and getting to pier when possible. I have never caught pompano, so I need detailed instructions on where to go, what time, how to rig and what to use. Does not have to be at the pier. All help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Pomp help
This is how I do it. I fish with jigs, usually pink, and usually 5/8 ounce depending on wind and tides. Some people tip their jigs with sandfleas. I usually don't, but it helps when they're being picky. As far as the time goes, I've caught them all hours of the day. If the water is clear you can sight cast to them. A decent pair of polarized glasses are almost necessary to sight fish. Pompano are usually coming from the east this time of the year so if you're on one of the gulf piers, that's the side you'll want to be fishing on. They often run close to the beach and when they get to the pier most of the time they run up the side and around the end. Your jig needs to stay close to the bottom usually. I have seen them come up for a jig but you're better off bouncing the jig on the bottom. Get your jig in front of them, let it sink, and bounce it on the bottom with twitches of your rod. I've probably caught as many or more blind casting when the water is on the murky side or in deeper water where you can't see the bottom as well. It works for me. Good luck!
