Thread: Penn Battle Maintenance Question

I purchased a Penn Battle back in the spring and have fished it about 10 days. On my last trip a 12 year old kid came up and started talking to me about how he loved to fish, but his mom and dad wouldn't let him bring a rod. Anyway, long story short I let him us my battle and I used my stardic ci4 4000. He accidentally let it get dunked several times. I rinsed as usual and really didn't worry too much. I go yesterday to mess with it and it is running REALLY rough. I pulled it apart, rinsed with dishwater and greased. I would say it is about 90 percent now. I pulled of the side plate to access all the gears. Is there anything else I should do? Also I read about guys "packing" with grease. Does that literally mean to pack the whole chamber full of grease? I also see references to packing with super glue to "waterproof"? I apologize for my reel maintenance ignorance, but have started investing in decent stuff and am emphatic about maintaining my things. Thanks for any info or tips!

You probably have some salt corroded bearings. Not much you can do unless you call and get some new ones. You can add some good oil and be sure there's nothing in them. Make sure you put some oil on the handle too around the knob connection, that makes a difference too. Try taking the handle off, and then start spinning the rotor, and you can pin down where the stiffness is coming from. Also if the handle is too tight it will bind on the sideplate so do not over tighten it. I wouldn't pack it all with grease but some people will pack the bearings with extra grease to prevent more saltwater intrusion but I prefer just to oil them. There's only one open bearing on the reel anyways so don't really see that as necessary. You just want a light coating of grease on all the gears and moving parts.

I coat all interior surfaces and gears of my saltwater reels with a generous amount of the blue Yamaha All-Purpose grease recommended by Alan Tani.
Bearings are opened and cleaned out, then oiled, and left open... ReelDoc did this on a reel he overhauled for me and I liked it, easy to see what condition the bearings are in, and not have to fight to remove & replace the seal every time.
Drag gets a thin coating of Cal's Grease.

Anecdotal Battle story.
I've had one weird malfunction on my Battle 5000.
I had just cast out, turned the handle to close the bail, the bail closed and it seized.
Couldn't turn the handle & rotor wouldn't turn... WTF?
Found the anti-reverse bushing spring was sticking halfway out from the gap behind the rotor cup
Easy enough to fix it, and it hasn't happened again.
