Penn Battle II 6000 Reel Line

I just got a Penn Battle II 6000 reel combo, I also have a Okuma 8000 with fresh 17# line on it that I will not be using. Thinking about transferring the 17# over to the Battle II 6000 for use in the surf. Question to the experts, is 17# on the 6000 a bit much for the surf, targeting no specific kind of fish.

Wouldnt be too much if you get on to some reds, with that combo your gonna want to target the bigger fish in the surf zone anyway, 17# test would handle redfish, bigger stingrays, black drum ect... I would bring a lighter action combo for pomps, flounder, and other smaller surf species

I have that exact combo with 20 pound test and I hit 6 bull reds in perdido pass with it so I would say 17 would be good. It gives u more line capacity in case ur catch wants to run ! Hope it helps

What was your setup and bait used to get the reds.

17# is fine for surf. I usually have a 20# setup for a chunk of cutbait or large shrimp. Mine is a FN Lethal 60 which may not be the same specs as a Fierce 6000. I let that sit out any time I am fishing in hopes to catch drum. It is also my Jack setup when they are busting the surface within casting range of a 2oz silver spoon.

You might find yourself horsing in smaller fish with that setup, so consider that when chosing bait and hook.

Depends completely on what you are targeting. For Bull reds & small sharks, the 6000 with 17# line works.

For pompano, whiting, slot reds, ladyfish, blues, specs, etc.., its complete overkill.
    Haywire and coach like this.

    Carl, I have a Battle 3000 and 4000 for smaller/closer catch, I hope.

For reds I like throwing chunks of mullet or live shrimp
