    Penn Battle 5000 or 6000

Which size reel would be better for surf/pier fishing? I plan to use about 150yards of 20lb braid backing and the rest filled with 15-17lb mono

For kings on the pier, I would go with a 6000 and load it with 17# mono, no braid.

For surf fishing, both seem to be overkill unless you are targeting bull reds out on Fort Morgan.
For pompano, slot red, whiting, etc.., in the surf, a 3000 is more like it.

I have the 6000 on my king rod with braid backing and it works great, have also used it in the surf for reds and sharks. I would go with the 6000

I would go to or call J & M and get their advice.
I'm thinking 5000, but I don't have one, so what do I know

Pretty much what Snake said. I have a 5000 but had originally planned to get a 6000 when I bought it. I use it for throwing lures for kings and have it spooled all the way with 30# braid. I decided against the 6000 purely due to the size difference. The difference between the two sizes was incredibly drastic.
