Thread: Not the Gulf, but.....

...a good fishing trip nonetheless. Water is still cold in Central Arkansas, too, but a nice south wind today warmed up the air temps. 14 nice crappie, three bass, 6 of the crappie were over 2 lbs. They were slow, but when they hit you had to set the hook in self defense.

Hope you guys light them up on the coast this weekend.

Saturday I fished Lay Lake between Birmingham and Montgomery for crappie. Using jigs on deep river ledges. I had 28 keeper crappie for about 5 hours fishing. I had to quit using feather jigs because the drum and small stripes wouldn't leave them alone. Lots of fun catching the drum on ultra light tackle as they were running about 1 pound average. I kept count and one string of 12 fish in a row had 10 drum, 1 crappie, and 1 small stripe. After I switched to a plastic grub I could focus more on the crappie. The surface water temp was 57 degrees and I was catching the fish in 22 to 28 foot water depth. The drum preferred the feather and the crappie liked the plastic best. I am looking forward to my month trip in October but will probably not make it down until then.

Oldfisherman: I used to fish Lake Jordan this time of year in 15-25' and catch some real slammers when the crappie were staging. Sounds like you have it down too. Those little drum aren't bad eating too if they aren't full of worms.
