Depends on what you catch. Gaffs are used for kings and cobia. Small gaffs or nets can be used for spanish. Nets are used for just about everything else. There's almost always someone willing to gaff a king or cobia for you, but sometimes it can be hard to find a net. If you want to bring one, I'd suggest a net.

Most versatile would be the net.Ragnar Benson:

IF you want holes in your fish, use a gaff.
Otherwise, use a net! ;-)(RETIRED) mostly.

J&M tackle has the best price on a net I have found. They offer a better quality net with a good rope that is cheaper than what some of the big box stores sell. I suggest you wait till you get to the beach and buy the best from the best.
Then when somebody yells, "need a net," help a brother out.

These guys are right. I' been through the same issue several years ago and opted for a good net. Most everything will go into the net, especially if your using light tackle and targeting smaller or medium sized fish. When the kings and Cobes are here as they are now, you need a gaff for these that won't fit into the net, but someone is always willing to help and gaff your fish for you. That's what it's all about on the Gulf Shores pier, helping each other. Friendliest pier I've found.

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
