New gear?
Hunting season is over...time to put up all the decoys, camo, rifles, and shotguns. While breaking out the tackle for the upcoming Spring, is there anything (gear wise) that you will be adding to your collection? Maybe you are modifying something you already have? I, myself, will be working on a second pier cart to bring for when I am alone and do not need to haul 2 people's gear.
-
Re: New gear?
I will be looking to get a cobia set up that could also be used as a good king rod/reel as well. Never caught a cobia but would like to learn how this year.
-
Re: New gear?
I got a new ling setup , pretty nasty if I do say so .. Idk how to post pics from my phone to here
-
Re: New gear?
Peaches...Do you have a Photobucket account or something similar? You could use your smart phone to access the account and copy the URL, then paste it on here.
-
Re: New gear?
Ling set up is another thing I'm doing. I settled for using left over riff raff I had last year. I will build a new rod before they start running.
-
Re: New gear?
I just bought a Penn Battle 5000 and mounted it on a inexpensive Offshore Angler, Power Stick, 7', 10-17#, 1/2-2.oz lure, light action.
It did really well landing a 25lb 8oz Big Ugly in the surf, so I think it'll do well for the rest of the common species in the shallows.
Next up I was looking for something suitable for King & Ling, 8-10', one piece will do, but preferably two piece.
I've a Penn 705Z I'm not using and thought it would suffice for this purpose.
Maybe one of these?

Any input would be appreciated.
And I'm grabbing a used pier cart.

Re: New gear?
I plan on build a new Phenix 9'3" Black Diamond Hybrid, fully woven carbon fiber blank, with K series guides, a matagi reelseat, some type of speciality sealed cork grips. Top it all off with a VS200 filled with Momoi diamond braid. If my wife is going to limit me to building one rod per year for myself, I might as well go all out.

Sounds SICK :headbang:
I'd put a GPS tag on it before I ever left it on a cart and walked away from it. But I'm paranoid like that.

Re: New gear?
I'm gonna train myself to reel with my left hand. Got a vs150s for the pier and a red sr-12 for off shore. Both right handed.
-
Re: New gear?
Why not sell them and use the money to get some nice left handed reels?
-
Re: New gear?
I took my old POS Lamiglass, stripped it down, extended it 12 inches with an old aluminum dip net handle and when I have 30 minutes to kill,I'm going to slap some guides on it with 20lb orange dacron.A 10' 3'' cig slinger.

Ive already got a couple vs left handed. Also have a few stradics, vm150 and etc etc with the handle on the right side. It's really hard to find high end gears in the left handed version so I thought it'll be nice to be able to fish both hand. Also I am right handed so its really awkward when I cast with my right hand then switch the rod to my left hand to reel with my right hand.

Delta, if I remember correctly you work in daphne right?

Be sure and add a few moquitoes or luvbugs to the thread coat for looks ;-) LOL!
I'm adding a new set of plastic trays for my softside tackle system to better organize my lures and weights for pier, shore, wade or jetty.

Re: New gear?
Yea Dave,I miss that ugly drunken piece of art work.A list of things I epoxied into were a:fiddler crab, bull minnow, condom label, shrimp,Miller Lite label,O'le Forester label, several bugs and written in big letters in the butt was something like"THIS ROD MAY BE UGLY BUT IT WILL OUT FISH ALL THE PRETTY ONES OUT HERE UNLESS I BUILT IT!!!

Re: New gear?
Found 3 706s in an antique store today for a great price. Buying them tomorrow. Keeping one and selling the other two to break even so I can finally have one of my own to fish with. :headbang: :fishing:

I'm looking for something to take to the near-shore rigs to target large kings and other pelagics more so than skinny water. I have looked at the Trident 13 and Trident Ultra 4.3. Have yet to sit in a Hobie. I'm 6'1" and 215.
-
Re: New gear?
ultras are killer, and id love to have one, if i had another paddle boat,
also check into malibu x factor, stealth 14 and 12, the native slayer, and definitely the hobie outback, pa14, pa12, revo, and adventure,
imho hobies cant be beat and i love having the extra speed of my revo offshore
and my top recommendation would be to
-
Re: New gear?
get a hobie so you save money in the long run, iv got a revolution 13 w/ turbo fins if youd like to try..
but if getting a hobie, definately reccomend the fins and rudder if your in decent shape

Re: New gear?
Netting spanish is better. But if you want a small gaff, use a 12/0 snatch hook on an old solid glass boat rod with a low gear ratio reel. You can find combos like that for $20 at yard sales. No rope to mess with, just let it down then reel it up.Before there was any such thing as a production drop net, that's how us kids did it because only a few such as #r had them. Not to get off subject, but there was another luxury we didn't have until only 15 years ago, pier carts.Back in the day, people only brought what they needed, dang it was much less cluttered back then......
-
Re: New gear?
LOL... Just picked up a used pier/beach cart today.
My all terrain Radio Flyer wagon just wasn't cutting it on the beach.

Good idea John! What is the biggest braided line that you carry at J&M? I've got an old baitcasting reel that I could put on a stiff rod for my mini gaff, just need 50 ft or so of heavy line. I bought a net at J&M which works fine for everything except spanish and kings. They are so slender that they slip through the net and also chewed my net up real bad last year. That's why I'm making a gaff.

I've got some 80lb braid I can send you 50 ft .....I won't use my net for toothy fish anymore they chewed up the last one and hard to find replacement nets for it....I guess there is a net place up 59 that has it(maybe in Foley).....but when there I am fishing and not looking at running around on a search mission for net.....Fin posted the name not long ago....

Re: New gear?
We carry braid up to 200lb but that is overkill. The next time your in hit me up for some 100 or 130lb used stuff that we have laying around.

Re: New gear?
I think I'm finally going to build my vertical jigging set-up this season. Think I'll go with a Shimano Trevala rod, medium heavy, and a Spheros 8000, and probably 65lb braid. Should be fun! :):
-
Re: New gear?
John G's building a new rod for me and it's going to be hard waiting to try it out, but I won't have any choice until the kings show up. :)

Where is the best Hobie dealer to go check out their line of yaks in person? I've only seen pictures of them online, never fished with anyone that owns one but hear great reviews out of their products. Thanks.

Re: New gear?
Well I was wrong. They were not 706s. They are 3 Spinfisher 700s. I still picked them up. The two I am goin to sell are in great shape mechanically, well lubed and taken care of. The paint is original but definitely shows signs they were well user. I will have them put up in the BST section sometime tomorrow for anyone interested.

That's the second time in 2 days I've heard somebody talking about GPS tags. Can you give me a little info on them?
-
Re: New gear?
Had to look it up myself Rob.It's a chip put in pets for GPS tracking,I think.
-
Re: New gear?
only problem with those chips is you cant track them on the net. you have to have the animal(or reel and rod in this case) to use a scanner to know who it belongs to. its not a GPS so to say. its more of a electronic identifier
