My first Redfish at the pier!
Ok yesterday I gave three older gentlemen a sack of sand fleas is caught when I was going home. This morning my son and I watched them land 4 nice reds with my sand fleas they had saved from yesterday. So I went back to the beach and got another sack full and went back this afternoon and landed my first redfish.
I lost one bigger than that and was broke off 3 times after that. My son Jack was broken off once as well. We had mono line and I guess the break offs were something with teeth but never saw them. Then Jack landed this whopper !Last edited by Blindbat; 05-31-2014 at 12:12 AM.

Well done Gann!
Both on the bait and the fish ;-)
That is a fine specimen of Striped burrfish that Jack caught (his first I assume?)
One of the things I luv about fishing the pier is you just never know what may bite next!(RETIRED) mostly.

Nice red! Good eating size. That is a crazy looking fish your son caught, very cool! Never seen that before.

Great fish, but the smile on Jack's face is the best.
Love seeing kids having a blast fishing.Ragnar Benson:

What sort of rigging for sand fleas? Maybe a #3 stainless hook on a 3' flouro leader with a swivel and a pyramid sinker? I have an 8yr old and we are planning to catch some small spades this week. A bit of time catching crabs and then a couple of slot reds would be awesome.

I Carolina rigged for them. If I had been smart and had a heavier leader I would have landed 2 more and my boy list one too. I had a 12 lb leader. I would go with 25 may even go 40. I had 2 big fish on that cut my line and I'm assuming they were blues because my buddies landed a couple of blues that morning fishing the same way. Kahle hook, sand flea, 2 ft leader, swivel and 1 oz egg sinker. The waves were pretty rough. Catch em in the surf. Good luck !

And then again with a heavier leader you may not have gotten the fish or hits that you did .
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
