Mitchell 302 reel
Wanting to get a good reel without busting the bank. Are the older Mitchell 302s good for pier fishing?

Oh yeah, they work awesome especially if you do some upgrades to them. Check out the DIY thread and you'll know what I mean.

They will last you quite some time with good maintenance, and cleaning. You will need to invest about $75 to get one in good condition and upgrade or to buy one ready to go.
Your other options are to just go with something new, like a penn fierce or battle or anything comparable with a smooth drag and some capacity. You'll want 250-300 yds of 12-17# mono for kings, reds, sharks, and jacks. (Although the jacks will give you quite the challenge on that.)
If you just want some good set-ups for the pier, all you need is 2 or 3. 1 heavier for kings, ect, and 1 or 2 light 4000 or smaller size for everything else.Visit our facebook page

Re: Mitchell 302 reel
I bought two of the cabella's salt strikers last year when they had them on sale. They hold lots of 12# test and have caught a bunch of kings and reds. Great sealed drag. I don't fish salt water every day so I don't know how they would hold up to that, but the three or four weekends a year I'm able to come down they are doing great.
