Longest Pier?
Though several piers claim the title, which is actually the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico?
Okaloosa Island Pier? (1262 feet) ha-ha!
Pensacola Pier? (1471 feet) Nope
Panama City Piers? (1500 feet) Wrong
Gulf State Park Pier? (1540 feet) Uh-uh
Navarre Pier? (1545 feet) negative
Pensacola Bay Fishing Bridge (2500 feet) *yawn*
Sunshine Skyway? in Tampa Bay (about 1.75 miles) Not even close!
The longest pier on the gulf of Mexico can't even be viewed using conventional photography.
You must view it from space to see the whole thing.
Progesso's Prolonged Pier (on the northern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Penninsula) is by far the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico at 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) and one of the longest structures of its kind in the world.
It is used as a cruise ship dock.

Here is the same area on Google Maps...

OK, maybe the South Skyway Bridge is the longest FISHING pier on the Gulf of Mexico, but wouldn't it be cool to see what fish can be caught 4 miles out in the Gulf!Last edited by Pier#r; 01-06-2015 at 02:32 PM.

What I find kind of funny is that many of the piers that claim to be "the longest pier" have most of that length over land! Seems to me, that part of the pier shouldn't count! If they want to add to the pier length, it should be on the end where you can catch fish!

Naw, that doesn't count as pier in my book.
That is a pier only by some general definitions. Heck, that could loosely be defined as an Isthmus too.
To me a pier is defined as a raised, horizontal platform extending from a shore over water and supported by piles or pillars.
I'd define that as a causeway, breakwater or jetty, forming a man-made harbor.Ragnar Benson:

The Gulf Shores fishing pier could be extended out to 4, 10, or even 20 miles. We could even put a bus lane on it to transport us old broken down fishermen and our gear out to the octi. All it would take is money and lots of it. The daily fee to fish from it would be a little more than $8 a day. Would also need a few bait and tackle shops, a hotel or two and several bars and grills along it's length.

Very cool image. Clear to see that the structure is impacting the currents and longshore transport of sediments in the system around & downdrift of it. Coastal engineering researchers dream to monitor that!
Wonder how the fishing is???Carl

If there was a Hooter out there no one would wet a hook. I know I would just sit in there and slobber on myself. Too old to do anything else, but it's nice to dream.

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
