    Ling? Lemon fish? Cobia?

Heard them called all three names growing up. Why?

Many fresh water fish have a thousand different names too. Like the Choupique, grinnel, cypress trout, mud fish or dog fish. I call them a few other names too when I'm bass fishing and one of them bite instead.

Cobia is the official name, Rachycentron canadum is the Latin name.
Colloquial (or common) names are often descriptive of a species, or misnomers for similar looking fish.

Other common names include black kingfish, black salmon, ling, lemonfish, crabeater, prodigal son, black bonito, and aruan tasek.
Trade names are often those made up to sell fish and even more confusing.

I grew up catching white perch and couldn't imagine why people would eat something called crappie.

No matter how many names I use for myself, the telemarketers and IRS still find me with no trouble.

And cobia are found in different oceans, I think, and get some of their names from different locales. But not triple tails?
