How is the construction going on the Lea Callaway Bridge over the little lagoon pass? One of my fishing holes when at the beach

GULF SHORES, Alabama -- Along-awaited project to replace the Lee Callaway Bridge over Little Lagoon Pass and improve the inlet is ramping up and the city has temporarily closed the public beach access near the span.
“The Lagoon Pass Bridge construction is under way, relocating utilities, and very quickly they’ll start working on the bridge itself,” Grant Brown, the city’s director of recreation and cultural affairs, told the council this week. “And, as such, ALDOT contractors have moved in and started to actually mobilize and because of their impact to Lagoon Pass in the park area we will be closing Lagoon Pass park ... at least through the month of January.”

Anderson/manderson@al.com)The $12 million project on Ala. 182/West Beach Boulevard will entail the construction of a new two-lane bridge, which is expected to be complete by November 2014, and roughly double the width of the pass to 80 feet with the construction of a new seawall.
Opelika-based Scott Bridge Company won the low-bid contract.
Before the new bridge is constructed a temporary bridge will be erected next to the existing span on its north side.
Don Powell, a preconstruction engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation, has said that the temporary bridge work and the relocation of utilities will take three to six months.

Brown said with heavy equipment moving into the area over the last week, the city decided to close the park over concerns about public safety and will work with state highway officials to work out an access agreement.
“We will look at the best and safest way for the public to continue to have access but if you recall it’s going to be about an 18-month project so it will be a significant impact to our community while this work continues,” Brown said.
